Tech experts suggest that the PS5 Pro is unlikely to achieve 60fps with GTA 6

Tech experts at Digital Foundry, along with validation from IGN, have examined the leaked specifications of the PlayStation 5 Pro and provided insights into its performance capabilities, particularly in relation to the highly anticipated GTA 6.

Scheduled for release by Sony in Q4 2024, the PS5 Pro features an upgraded CPU with a ‘High CPU Frequency Mode’ that provides a 10% boost to 3.85GHz, as well as a GPU supporting advanced ray tracing with 33.5 teraflops of power, a significant increase from the standard PS5’s 10.28 teraflops. Despite these enhancements, the performance comparison between the PS5 and PS5 Pro could be around 10.28 to 16 or 17 teraflops.

The anticipation for the PS5 Pro is particularly high with the imminent launch of GTA 6 in 2025, which is expected to create a surge in the gaming market. However, Digital Foundry’s Rich Leadbetter suggests that, based on the PS5 Pro’s CPU capabilities and historical trends seen in previous GTA games, both the standard PS5 and the PS5 Pro are likely to run GTA 6 at 30fps, unless there are exceptional developments.

Digital Foundry highlights the superior rendering capabilities of the PS5 Pro, including the ability to upscale 1080p games to 4K using PlayStation Spectral Super Resolution Upscaling (PSSR), provided that developers implement support for this technology. Additionally, the PS5 Pro has an extra 1.2GB of system RAM available for developers, while sharing the same 16GB of GDDR6 memory as the standard PS5.

Considering Sony’s past pattern of introducing Pro versions of their consoles, the PS5 Pro’s release is expected to follow a similar timeline to the PS4 Pro. However, Sony has adjusted its sales forecast for the PS5 down from 25 million to 21 million units for the current financial year, despite an increase in sales during the holiday quarter of 2023.

Sony has also announced that it will not release major sequels for their key PlayStation franchises before April 2025. Recent layoffs affecting over 900 employees and the closure of Sony’s London studio further highlight the challenges faced by the company’s gaming division.
